Photo Friday: “Suribachi Salute”

We continue to observe and remember the 67th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima. Today’s Photo Friday is dedicated to all the brave men who sacrificed so much during those 36 days of hell. Semper Fi, Warriors!
U.S. Marines pose in front of the American flag moments after the historic second flag raising on top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945. Four of the second flag raisers (James Bradley, Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley & Mike Strank) appear with their jubilant buddies. Only three of the original six, second flag raisers would survive the battle.

I would like to say Happy Memorial Day to my grandfather who isn’t here anymore unfortunately, but will always be here in spirit. He is actually in the photograph and is one of my prize possessions next to somethings that he made later in life.

    • Mandi,
Thank you so much for sharing this. I can see why this photo would be a prized possession for you. I would like to pass along a Happy Memorial Day to you and your family. As well as a Semper Fi, to your grandfather as he is guards the streets of Heaven! Thank you again.
